Notes: 2C - The Laws of Orbits, How things Move in Space

Watch on YouTube OR watch/download on Google Drive

Concepts

  • Kepler’s 1st Law - Orbits are never circles, and the larger object is at a foci of an ellipse (oval)
  • Kepler’s 2nd Law - Area and time prove that objects get faster as they approach the foci
  • Kepler’s 3rd Law - Math comparing the length of a year (period) to distance from the Sun
  • Newton’s Universal Law of Gravity - Math behind Gravity, and why everything is shaped and moves the way it does
  • Gravity Wells - Mass bends space so objects can fall towards one another… and miss (orbits)

Summary Question(s) / Task(s)

  1. Diagram, Label and Explain all of the ideas of Kepler's 1st and 2nd Laws in a single diagram using the Sun and Jupiter. ( Foci, Speed Up, Slow Down, Sun Location, Planet Location)

Post-Reflection Monologue (only used during the emergency situation of Spring 2020)
